Alexander Wang Pre-Fall 2011

Black is back, or so it would seem at Alexander Wang's Pre-Fall 2011 collection, shown in New York on January 7th. Does anyone remember his quote from his SS11 collection? "Did you notice anything? There's no black!" he said. Guess that didn't last long.
The collection is made up of 27 noir based looks sported by Aymeline Valade and Caroline Brasch Nielsen. Wang took a new direction for this collection, making sure he covered all aspects of a wardrobe to lure the buyers in. Many of his classic pieces have been injected with womanly charm for next season. "It's our best-selling pieces with a lighter hand and a new femininity," Wang said.

It appears that Wang's fairytale past is behind him for now. The looks on offer in this collection are much more 'grown up' and sophisticated. Although soft draping on shirts and skirts add a playful touch to an otherwise mature ensemble.

Following on from an article we posted last week on Sheers for SS11, Wang sadly only has one piece to offer for Pre-Fall, in the form of this beautiful opaque shirt. We don't hold it against him though, surely it can't be all that practical for Autumn to have a pair of see through trousers, (although not many of us fashionistas let the weather stop us.)

This shirt reminded me of the ones on offer at Topshop for SS11 in their 'Graduate' collection. When pairing an oversized shirt with anything, surely it's got to be the Wang way? Everything is pristine yet the shirt adds a touch of playfulness.

Wang's classic biker style waistcoats and jackets continue the list of garments to be reinvented for Pre-Fall. Instead of his favoured leather though, he has switched to a lighter camel coloured suede in one of the designs.

As for his evening wear, the two dresses above are worth mentioning. The draped yet figure hugging midi gowns are a pleasant arrival of colour to a typical Wang collection. It's a shame there isn't much more colour, but we understand his love for all things black, so perhaps teal and burnt orange are only as far as he's prepared to go for now...
